THE NOUNS : KINDS OF NOUNS
1] What are nouns? → Nouns are naming words. Nouns are the words name
people, animals, things, places, qualities and feeling.
THERE ARE 5 KINDS OF NOUNS:
1] Proper Nouns
2] Common Nouns
3] Collective Nouns
4] Abstract Nouns
5] Material Nouns
1) Proper Nouns : Proper
Nouns are special names given to the persons, places, things or animals. Always
remember proper nouns start with a capital letter.
EXAMPLE: Mumbai, Diwali, The Bible, Tony etc.
2) Common Nouns: Common
nouns are the names given to the persons, places, things or animals of the same
kind. They are not special names and hence they do not start with a capital
letter.
EXAMPLE: boy, men, city, day, cat, phone, etc.
3) Collective Nouns: A
collective noun is the name of a collection of persons, animals or things. They
do not have special name and so do not start with a capital letter.
EXAMPLE: bunch, herd, gang, army, fleet, bouquet,
etc.
4) Abstract Nouns: Nouns
that refer to ideas, feelings or thoughts are known as Abstract nouns. We can’t
touch them. They can only be felt.
EXAMPLE: equality, childhood, happiness, unity,
weakness, etc.
5) Material Nouns: The
name of a material or substance of which the things are made of is called
material noun. It can be countable or uncountable nouns.
EXAMPLE: Milk, glass, pen, sugar, tea, books, etc.
